THE EFFECT OF BIFURCARIA BIFURCATA IN THE TREATMENT OF VITILIGO
Index
Bifurcaria bifurccata is an alga found in tide pools on the rocky shores of the Atlantic Ocean and western Mediterranean. The extract of the seaweed consists mainly of alginates with a gelatinous consistency, but it is also rich in essential micronutrients for the body such as iron, potassium and calcium. In addition, it contains diterpenes and polyphenols, which are useful for their antioxidant characteristics.
There are articles in the scientific literature regarding the use of extracts of such seaweed for their medicinal properties. Such extracts exhibit immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, and protective properties of the nervous system: properties that are of great benefit, especially in the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases such as vitiligo.
What benefits does Bifurcaria bifurccata have in the treatment of vitiligo?
It is well known that in cases of vitiligo there is a deficiency of the enzyme tyrosinase, a key enzyme in detoxifying the body from oxygen radicals. The antioxidants in Bifurcaria bifurcata extract compensate for this deficiency by reducing oxidative stress in the vitiligo patient.
In addition to this, the presence of polyphenols also has an immunomodulatory effect: these active ingredients promote the differentiation of T lymphocytes into regulatory T lymphocytes: the latter are responsible for eliminating T helper lymphocytes, which become active for self antigens, and their deficiency can cause or aggravate autoimmune diseases, including vitiligo.
Vitiligo also causes local inflammation in the affected areas, as the anti-melanocyte T lymphocytes typical of the condition, when activated to kill melanocytes, cause the release of proinflammatory cytokines, causing inflammation.
Consequently, the application of Bifurcaria bifurcata extract can help in this regard as well, due to its anti-inflammatory action.
When to use Bifurcaria bifurcata extract?
In light of all these advantages and the fact that the extract of such seaweed does not have the problem of annoying burning caused by other anti-inflammatory active ingredients, such as piperine (Piper Nigrum extract), it can be concluded that it is an excellent active ingredient for treating vitiligo that develops in particularly delicate areas of the body, such as the skin of the periocular and peribuccal areas.
Wikenfarma research has selected this important seaweed as the primary active ingredient in VITIwiken face cream, designed specifically to treat vitiligo of the most sensitive areas of the body, such as the face or even the genital areas. The cream is designed to counter the advancement of vitiligo and to physiologically stimulate its remission in the most sensitive areas of the body in case the condition is stable.
