Aesthetic medicine is that branch of medicine that focuses on the prevention and treatment of blemishes and aging, both cutaneous and systemic. As a consequence of UV exposure, situations of “elastosis”, i.e., increased production of elastin stimulated by solar radiation, which, however, does not conform to and fulfill its role of maintaining elastic tone, and is often associated with degeneration of collagen as well.[3]

The role of DNA and RNA hydrolysates

Among the various active ingredients identified for the purpose of improving skin appearance and combating such known issues of aging, DNA and RNA hydrolysates play a special role.

Such chemical species are able to play a dual role:first , the longer RNA fractions, consisting of between 18 and 24 nucleosides, if they can penetrate the epidermis and enter dermal cells are able to inhibit the expression of particular genes responsible for intrinsic aging, depending of course on the type of nucleosides present in the RNA fraction in question. Then they bind to and prevent the mRNA coding for the protein bound to the gene of interest from being read. [4]

For example, they are able to inhibit hyaluronidase, and ensure a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid in the skin, which has an important structural and moisturizing function. Deficiencies in hyaluronic acid, in fact, contribute to the loss of elastic skin tone and the formation of wrinkles.[5]

Second , such hydrolysates are molecules that can bind multiple water molecules, thus acting as moisturizing agents[6]. In addition, they also perform, to a lesser but no less important extent, the function of protect other biological molecules from damage by UV radiation and oxidation by oxygen radicals, oxidizing instead of DNA or other endogenous molecules.
