HOW TO EFFECTIVELY USE XYLOSE IN TRICHOLOGICAL TREATMENTS
The nourishing effect of Xylose-based lotions.

Xylose is a simple sugar with 5 carbon atoms and a carbonyl group at the end of the carbon chain of the molecule, also referred to as “aldopentose,” which can be used in a great many therapeutic areas, especially in trichology.
This sugar is of fundamental importance in plant biology, being one of the monomers of hemicellulose used widely as a source of sustenance by many bacterial and fungal species that are able to metabolize it by converting it to fructose.
In humans, the ability to metabolize xylose is present, albeit in extremely reduced, and humans are unable to synthesize xylose independently, using it sometimes as a structural component of some proteoglycans and sometimes as an energy source for the gut microbiota. However, since our biochemistry is not particularly suited to the metabolism of this sugar, we cannot get all the calories we can from it, and partly because of this, it is used as a substitute for sucrose in diets, since it has the same sweetening power as sucrose but a calorie intake per ingested gram of 0.[1]
Is Xylose taken through diet sufficient?
Xylose taken in through the diet is metabolized only to a small extent, and much of that intake is used by intestinal bacteria for their fermentation reactions, with associated hydrogen production. The remainder is slowly absorbed by the intestine by passive diffusion.
Of the absorbed Xylose, a small part is metabolized in the liver and the rest is excreted in feces and urine.[1] In the liver it is used to build proteoglycans and later sent to other tissues where it may be needed, such as skin, kidney, muscle, or adipose tissue.
However, there is a peculiar and extremely effective use of this sugar to be highlighted: used in cosmetic formulations, by virtue of its moisturizing and thermoprotective capabilities., having in fact multiple hydroxyl groups and a carbonyl group, it coordinates easily with multiple water molecules, which then allows it to bind to the skin and hair and increase their hydration level. In addition, it promotes the formation a film that reduces the effects of the temperature excursion to which they are subjected.
How does it work in topical hair care formulations?
When applied topically, it can exert its moisturizing action by being absorbed by scalp cells and used by them to synthesize proteoglycans, some of which have an important function at the hair level, by virtue of the fact that they considerably lengthen the anagen (hair growth).[2] Xylose is, therefore, metabolized by follicle cells, which can bind it to serine residues in proteins forming proteoglycans such as decorin, which have the function of lengthening the growth phase of the hair, strengthening its structure.
By virtue of this, it can be said that Xylose performs a dual function when used in hair care products, such as TriVis Men’s AGA Lotion and TriVis Women’s AGA Lotion: these are the first lotions that contain Xylose specifically for men’s AGA and women’s AGA, respectively.
