What is trichology?

Index

What is trichology? Trichology is the science that helps in a professional a treat diseases of the hair and of the scalp. It is, in essence, the finish of the foreshadowing of “miracle” lotions and “foolproof” supplements with easy promises.

La trichology is a branch of medicine: there is a National Register of Medical Trichologists, which was created to prevent and counteract hair loss as best as possible and to treat its appearance. In light of all this, it was in Florence that the S.I.Tri. (Italian Society of Trichology), which brings together all those physicians who have specific scientific interest in this subject.

If you, too, are interested in finding out more about the world of trichology and the methodologies it has studied over time, we strongly encourage you to read the following article.

What are the most common hair disorders?

There are many diseases that affect the hair and scalp, and they are often related to general diseases (autoimmune diseases, endocrine system diseases, deficiency forms, systemic infections, etc.).

Throughout our lives, so many of us suffer or have suffered from problems sometimes as trivial as itching, or “dandruff,” sometimes of greater fiscal importance until we reach more complex situations with massive hair loss or scarring of the scalp.

The pathologies most frequently encountered in a trichological clinic are:

  • Telogen Effluvium Acute and Chronic
  • Androgenetic Alopecia male and female
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Infiammatory or infectious dermatitis of the scalp o Cicatricial alopecias
  • Seborrhea

When to inervene?

As in other branches of medicine, in trichology, “prevention is better than cure.”

When a patient becomes aware of excessive hair loss, insistent itching of the scalp, and sudden appearance of patches of alopecia, he or she should not underestimate the problem but seek medical attention as soon as possible.

The earlier appropriate treatment is initiated, the greater the chances of success. If a problem is noted in time, and especially the underlying causes, the more effective the therapeutic remedy will be.

Scientific investigations are now available to us (direct clinical examination, microscopy, pull-test, wash test, trichogram, polarized light trichoscopy) that make diagnosis easier and more accurate.

Medications that are truly efficient in counteracting various trichological disorders do exist, and especially because of this, it would be a pity to fall into the cliché that there is no remedy for hair loss.
