According to recent international studies (conducted by bodies such as the American Academy of Dermatology or the National Eczema Association), seborrheic dermatitis is a condition that affects about 5 percent of the world’s population. Although it is generally underestimated, this figure is steadily increasing due to the climate becoming increasingly hot and humid: this climatic situation drastically affects the sebum production of the scalp but, above all, the proliferation of Malassezia furfur, a fungus that is naturally found on the skin and is the presumed contributor to this condition.

The body parts most affected by this particular type of dermatitis are those skin areas that contain high amounts of sebaceous glands and are prone to severe inflammation and constant itching, such as, for example, the scalp, face, and hairline.

Seborrheic dermatitis, in addition to redness and oily skin, often causes scaling, causing the affected parts to lose some white or yellowish skin scales. In severe cases, actual splits may form, generating infection or erythema.

In addition, these symptoms can also have many psycho-physical implications such as:

  • Physical discomfort: Itching and irritation can cause physical discomfort and interfere with daily activities.
  • Eye problems: Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect the eyelids, causing inflammation
  • Hair loss: in severe cases, seborrheic dermatitis can cause more or less hair loss.
  • Psychological impact: can cause embarrassment and negatively affect self-esteem.

But what is seborrheic dermatitis caused by?

To date, the exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not completely clear, but it is thought to be due to a combination of the expansion of Malassezia furfur and the excessive secretion of sebum, the skin’s natural oil: excess sebum creates a favorable environment for the growth of Malassezia, which, as it expands, causes an inflammatory response.

Although this is the option most launched by experts, other factors that may contribute or exacerbate are: genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, stress, climate, and previous illnesses.

Is there a way to counteract this condition?

Despite being a very common condition, unfortunately, for seborrheic dermatitis there is still no specific cure, but several treatments through which symptoms can be controlled and quality of life greatly improved.

In order to prevent the condition from causing extensive damage to the scalp, it is necessary to counteract the expansion of Malassezia and sebum secretion of the affected parts through the use of anti-dandruff or sebum-regulating shampoos or, generally, by using formulations that contain antifungals.

However, the key aspects of treating this disorder are to protect and safeguard the areas affected by seborrheic dermatitis because the skin, when subjected to prolonged periods of inflammation, cannot properly perform its defense function, leaving room for infection to proliferate.

So how is it possible to PROTECT the scalp properly?

To combat seborrheic dermatitis and prevent damage to the hair and scalp, Wikenfarma research has formulated RestaX Shampoo AF MAN e RestaX Shampoo AF WOMAN.

The peculiarity of these products lies in the fact that they are great allies in the fight against seborrheic dermatitis and desquamation: within a few weeks, the hair becomes fresh and clean again, free of dandruff and the annoying flakes that cause itching and irritation.

Both versions differ in fragrance and contain:

  • Climbazole, an antifungal fungicide specifically to combat Malassezia furfur.
  • Zinc Lactate, which has an important sebum-regulating action.
  • Salicylic acid, which has keratolytic effects and is essential for reducing desquamation and promoting epidermal renewal.
