THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD TO COUNTER IRON DEFICIENCY
Index
According to a study published by IRCCS Humanitas, three out of ten people in Italy suffer from iron deficiency. The latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that iron deficiency is the most widespread nutritional deficiency in the world: this affects about 2 billion people causing, either directly or across the board, about five hundred thousand deaths each year.
In many countries of the world, especially in developing countries, iron deficiency is a public health problem and those most at risk are adolescents, women, the elderly and children; according to a survey by “IlSole24Ore,” in Italy iron deficiency is extremely widespread: about 45 percent of women and 23 percent of men suffer from it, often from an early age.
Iron is an indispensable micronutrient for the human body because it is a key component of hemoglobin; in addition, this plays a crucial role in the transport of oxygen to cells, allowing oxygenation of all tissues and organs in the body.
What can iron deficiency be caused by?
Iron deficiency, also known as sideropenic anemia, can result from several causes that can be distinguished various categories:
Poor dietary iron intake:
- Nutrition is not something to be underestimated; in fact, through a balanced diet it is possible to get the right amount of iron.
Factors that reduce iron absorption, such as:
- Coffee and tea intake: interfere with iron absorption, especially if consumed immediately after meals.
- Some medications: antacids, antibiotics and laxatives can reduce iron absorption.
In addition to these two categories, biological factors such as:
- Pregnancy and lactation: iron requirements increase during pregnancy and lactation.
- Gastrointestinal diseases: celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease may interfere with iron absorption.
- Achlorhydria: a condition that reduces the production of acid in the stomach, which is necessary for iron absorption.
- Blood loss
- Infancy: requirements increase during growth.
- Advanced age: absorption decreases with age.
- Gender: men generally have higher iron levels than women.
However, due to recent climate change, there are an increasing number of risk factors related to the environmental situation. For example, high temperatures increase and contribute to generating a high-stress situation in the human body; this type of stress is called “heat stress“-this situation causes the body’s need for iron to increase, and if the iron supply is not sufficient to meet the increased need, an iron deficiency may develop.
Is there any way to fight it?
Iron deficiency, if left untreated, triggers multiple mild symptoms, such as fatigue and fatigue, pallor, shortness of breath, dizziness and headache, difficulty concentrating, constant cold, and brittle nails and hair, while the more serious implications due to anemia are diverse and potentially serious, especially in the long term.
In addition to the symptoms already listed above, which can negatively affect quality of life, here are some of the more serious complications:
- A significant reduction in the number of red blood cells and the amount of hemoglobin in the blood.
- Dizziness and fainting
- Depression and anxiety
- Heart problems: Severe anemia can cause enlargement of the heart (cardiomyopathy) and increase the risk of heart failure.
- Compromise of the immune system
- Cognitive development problems: In children, iron deficiency can cause delayed cognitive and motor development, learning and memory problems.
- Complications during pregnancy
To avoid the development of this type of anemia, it is necessary to maintain a ‘balanced diet rich in iron, and in case this is not enough, it is appropriate to supplement specifically, being careful, however, of the contraindications of the various drugs on the market.
But how can one REINTEGRATE in a SAFE and SPECIFIC way?
To counter iron deficiency, Wikenfarma research has designed FERTOP, a microencapsulated pyrophosphate iron supplement, which, unlike normal drugs or supplements, has the advantage of being extremely safe and free of health risks thanks to this formula.
In addition to ensuring high tolerability, Fertop provides maximum bioavailability and absorbability, thanks to the formulation in combination with Vitamin C, a vitamin that promotes intestinal absorption of iron, and Lactoferrin.
