When people talk about sun damage, they immediately think of the skin. Yet, the scalp and hair structure are equally vulnerable to the harmful action of ultraviolet rays, especially in summer, when exposure is prolonged and often unconscious.

UVA rays, with their ability to penetrate deeply, disrupt the protein structures of thehair shaft, breaking down keratin and melanin and accelerating the oxidative processes responsible forpremature aging of the hair.
UVB rays, on the other hand, act more superficially but with greater energy, causing erythema and micro-inflammation of the scalp, especially in areas that are already thinning or sensitized.

It should be noted that the damage is not limited to cosmetic appearance: dryness, dullness, brittleness, and loss of elasticity are only the tip of the iceberg. Continuous solar aggression can also:

• impair local microcirculation, hindering the nourishment of the hair bulb;
• Promote desquamation and irritation by altering the skin barrier;
• reactivate or worsen preexisting pathological pictures, such as seborrheic dermatitis, androgenetic alopecia, inflammatory alopecia, or chronic forms of sensitization.

In the absence of adequate protection, even ongoing trichological therapies may be less effective, as the target tissue is constantly stressed by aggressive external factors.

For this reason, photoprotection is no longer to be considered an exclusively cosmetic or seasonal gesture, but a true extension of trichological therapy, designed to preserve the physiological balance of the scalp and ensure a better response to specific treatments.
